Matthew McConaughey Reveals Political Goals

Actors sometimes get involved in politics by seeking office. One was Ronald Reagan. First he was governor of California, then president of the United States. Arnold Schwarzenegger was another. He was also governor of California. Now Matthew McConaughey is talking a bit about his own potential political ambitions. What is he saying about his future? Will he ever go from the big screen to the corner office, maybe in his home state of Texas?

The Acclaimed Actor Met With Pope Leo XIV Recently in Italy

According to USA Today, the star was with Pope Leo XIV during the Holy Father's weekly public meet-and- greet at St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City. McConaughey told the outlet that he had a bunch of thoughtful questions for the pope about the current state of religion, especially among the young.

Although Matthew McConaughey didn't exactly have a script in hand for their impromptu conversation, he did have specific issues in mind.

He said, "...So I had some ideas. I wanted to talk to him about religion in today's world and where it sits with him as our moral compass. Where is religion today? Why has it declined? Why do we see a surge in youth running toward it? They've tried other things that they're seeing are vapid and don't really work because they're looking for more."

McConaughey also mentioned, "Nowadays, young people are "looking for some structure; they're trying to get more than what the world around them has given them. It's a good reason to pick some things out of religion, for sure."

He Was Also Thinking About AI

Like so many, McConaughey also had AI and its effect on our lives on his informal agenda. He shared, "There are already people looking to AI as their digital God. Whether we like what it looks like or not, it is going to represent a true image of mankind by the questions we ask of it and the results we want of it. We may not like what we see when we look in the mirror, but we could also love what we see. It could be a greater truth."

Sounding guardedly optimistic, McConaughey mentioned, "At the same time, there's a definite need for caution going forward because we're going to have to be the users of that tool and not let it tool us, so to speak. So those are the subjects, and what we got to talk about will be between [the pope] and I."

McConaughey's Possible Political Future

The Texas-born star told People a year ago that politics has to wait until his three kids are older. He clearly values his role as their beloved dad. McConaughey said at the time, "...[I]f I did that now, I wouldn't be able to be the father and spend the time with the family the way that I have so far and it's something I'm not ready to sacrifice."

Asked by USA Today if his encounter with the pope affected his intentions or timetable regarding getting into politics, Matthew McConaughey answered obliquely. "Look, I'm going to use this word 'religion,' even though some people are going to tune out when they hear that word. Life is essentially a religious experience. There's a lot of things we can learn about living life - how to treat others and how to treat ourselves - through religious texts and teachings. Even though I agree with the separation of church and state, the values of those should bleed down into the values of any political system."
