The group, best known for its early 1990s hit "Unbelievable," shared the news on Facebook and was reported by the outlet PennLive.
Who Was Derran "Derry" Brownson?
Before joining EMF, Brownson had founded the band Flowerdrum. But the keyboardist found his greatest success when he, bass guitarist Zac Foley, drummer Marc Decloedt, DJ Milf, guitarist Ian Dench, and singer James Atkin formed the group in 1989.
A year later, EMF, which stands for Epsom Mad Funkers, released its most successful single, "Unbelievable." The award-winning dance song, which was ironically about a breakup, became a worldwide hit. It also topped the charts in the United States and has since become a staple at sporting events.
EMF would release four albums before breaking up in 1997. Brownson would go on to form the alternative band LK. But he would reunite with EMF for several performances over the years. The band released its fifth album in 2024.
But last year, Brownson shared that he had been diagnosed with a brain tumor. He underwent a procedure to have it removed. However, a cause of death for the EMF keyboardist has not been announced.
EMF Paid Tribute to Brownson
The band Brownson founded paid tribute to him on social media.
"Late last night we started to hear the news that we have lost our Brother In Arms Derran Brownson," the caption read. "We are devastated; the only solace we can find is that we are eternally grateful Derry was able to join us on stage a couple times just a few short months back.
"Nothing will ever be the same again without our band mate and friend, fly high brother Derry."
Brownson's brother, Steve, also shared a statement about his passing.
"He was a much-loved brother, uncle, son and friend, and will be deeply missed by everyone who knew him and loved him," he wrote. "Derry had a beautiful and gifted soul lighting the space around him with love, energy and kindness. He fought bravely for so long, sticking up a middle finger to his assailant! He played one last gig in Bristol this year as a thank you to his fans.
"Our family is heartbroken and would really appreciate some privacy and kindness as we come to terms with this terrible loss," he added. "We are so very proud to have shared his wonderful life's journey with him. More will be shared when we are ready."
