The longtime bodyguard and close friend of country star Darius Rucker has died at the age of 66.

Eugene "Buddy" Wright spent more than three decades protecting Rucker and also worked as a bodyguard for his band, Hootie & The Blowfish.
Their professional relationship developed into a close friendship over the years, with Rucker describing Wright as far more than simply a member of his security team.
Darius Rucker Pays Emotional Tribute to Longtime Bodyguard
Rucker announced Wright's death on social media on Monday, sharing an emotional message about the impact his longtime friend had on his life.
"Buddy was my friend, my brother, my bodyguard, my best friend, and when I needed him to be, my therapist," he wrote. "I love you Buddy. Thank you for changing my life."
Indie-rock artist Chris Holly also paid tribute on social media, sharing a photo of herself embracing Wright.
Holly revealed that Wright received a cancer diagnosis around eight years ago and had previously entered remission.
"Buddy was tough as nails and put up one hell of fight, was in remission for a few years but tonight Buddy can rest. He will be so missed, never forgotten," she wrote.
Holly added that while Wright worked in security, "most importantly he was a friend, a friend to so many."
She concluded her heartfelt tribute by saying "Rest easy BW" alongside broken-heart and dove emojis.

More tributes followed, with Lisa Bryan Carter also sharing the sad news on social media.
"It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing for our dear Deacon Eugene "Buddy" Wright the husband of my sister Pastor Louvenia Carter-Wright," she wrote. "Please keep the Wright & Carter Family & the Open Door Apostolic Church Family 1&2 in your prayers."
"Praying for strength for the family during this difficult time. Sleep on Deacon Eugene 'Buddy' Wright! Job well done! You fought a good fight! We love you Buddy!"
The news comes as Rucker prepares for several performances across September and October.
His upcoming schedule begins in Salt Lake City on September 17 before taking him to Las Vegas and Nashville as a solo artist.
Rucker will also reunite with Hootie & The Blowfish for shows in Ocean City and Louisville before completing his current 2026 schedule with three additional performances.
His final scheduled show of the year takes place in North Charleston on October 10.
In July, the 60-year-old suggested that his days of extensive touring may be nearing an end, revealing that he could have around two years left on the road.
