Imagine the shock and fear of being told that you have cancer. Then the horror of finding out you did not have the disease at all after undergoing unnecessary surgery. That is what allegedly happened to Cassandra Barksdale, an Atlanta mother who was reportedly the victim of a major medical mistake.

Per the New York Post, "Cassandra Barksdale, 43, learned she apparently had just years to live when doctors gave her the results from another patient's biopsy last March...." She had a "full hysterectomy" that was not needed because of what the outlet terms "a lab mix-up." Barksdale reportedly filed a lawsuit in the case on August 4. She is allegedly looking for "$10,000 in damages and a jury trial."
Barksdale Was Allegedly Informed Last Year That She Had "Aggressive" Cancer
She was reportedly seen at Kaiser Permanente Southwood Medical Center in Jonesboro, Georgia. That was in early 2025. The reason, per the Post, was uterine fibroids. According to the outlet via court documents, a biopsy was performed. However, someone else's tissue sample was allegedly wrongly labeled as if it was Cassandra Barksdale's.
Thus, in early 2025, Barksdale learned she supposedly had "high-grade, aggressive endometrial uterine cancer...." Nevertheless, a scan indicated no sign of cancer or metastasis. Despite that, a doctor suggested that Barksdale have "her cervix, uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries [taken out]. She also had four lymph nodes removed," per the outlet.
Pathology results indicated no evidence of cancer. However, doctors wanted Cassandra Barksdale to have chemo.
She Finally Discovered the Alleged Mistake
Last September, Barksdale was supposedly told something devastating. Per the Post, doctors allegedly acknowledged that the cancerous tissue was someone else's. For about four months, she erroneously thought she had cancer.
Barksdale is now claiming negligence and says she "sustained, permanent and irreversible injuries."
Cassandra Barksdale Had a Press Conference
She spoke out publicly on August 4, describing the awful ordeal that she and her family allegedly went through. "My sons went into a deep depression," Barksdale shared. "I had to contact my kids to let them know that I have five years to live and that I'm going to die because I have aggressive cancer. I started contacting other attorneys to try to get trust funds so that way I could leave my house and have trust for my kids. It took a big hold over my family."
Despite being relieved to hear that she was now in the clear, Barksdale was distressed about the alleged mix-up. "But I was still upset because the person out there that got my tissue and was thinking that they only have fibroids, they're walking around for seven months thinking they only have fibroids, and I was the one with the cancer. So it made me feel very, you know, I was very angry and sad, and I was very concerned about the other person."
A Spokesperson for the Medical Facility Made a Statement
According to the outlet, a spokesperson for Kaiser Permanente said, "Ms. Barksdale should not have experienced this. We have highly trained staff and very thorough processes in place to prevent errors like this from taking place. After this occurred last year, we took immediate steps to ensure it could not happen again."
