The 24-year-old told the New Orleans Saints about his sudden decision, which came only a week into training camp.
Why Is Ja'Lynn Polk Suddenly Retiring From the NFL?
The wide receiver began his NFL career in 2024 as a member of the New England Patriots. Polk, who established himself at Texas Tech and the University of Washington during his college career, was then traded to the Saints last September.
The move came after Polk was put on the Patriots' reserve list in 2025-26 for a season-ending shoulder injury. As reported by PEOPLE, he was already a week into training camp.
Polk has not shared the reason for his retirement. Saints head coach Kellen Moore told the press today, Aug. 3, that personal reasons led to him being excused from the team's last two practices. He shared no other information with reporters.
Polk Was Just Getting Started
Polk played an integral role in Washington reaching the NCAA National Championship Game in 2024. The Patriots then drafted him in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft.
The Lufkin, Texas native would go on to have 12 catches for 87 yards over 15 games in his rookie year with New England.
As Pro Football Rumors shared, Polk was healthy and "happy with his role" with the Saints. The wideout had been getting his share of snaps and was "projected to be WR4 at best."
Moore didn't seem too concerned with finding a replacement for Polk. As reported by Pro Football Talk, the Saints have 12 receivers working for a spot on the team's roster, including Keenan Allen, who Moore coached when he was with the Chargers in 2023.
"We're always looking to see if something suits us, but right now we've got a lot of guys in that room that are all getting opportunities," Moore said.
