Country Music Star Says He Forgives Ex-Wife for Shooting Him

A relationship doesn’t really come back after your partner shoots you. However, this country singer can forgive them for what happened.

Not that we would know from experience, but a relationship doesn't really come back after your partner shoots you. And while Trace Adkins and his then-wife have not gotten back together, the singer can forgive her for what happened over 30 years ago.

Trace Adkins Thought His Then-Wife "Took It a Little Far"

Adkins opened up about the experience on the Tuesday, July 28, episode of This Past Weekend with Theo Von.

Back in 1994, the singer was married to his second wife, Julie Curtis. The couple argued over his drinking, and Curtis, in her anger, wanted Adkins to leave. He refused.

Curtis then grabbed a gun and put it under the left arm of Adkins. The singer joked to Von that she "took it a little far, I thought."

But when the singer attempted to disarm her, she pulled the trigger. The bullet went through his lungs and heart.

"I'd never seen her hold a gun, I'd never seen her shoot a gun. I knew she had one, but I'd never seen her use it," added Adkins. "I don't think she knew what was about to happen when she pulled that trigger. She thought it was a toy."

Adkins Almost Died

Doctors did not think Adkins would survive. He proved them wrong, though. He was airlifted to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he had emergency open-heart surgery. Adkins made a full recovery.

"It was a kill shot," said Adkins. "And the doctor said the only reason I survived was because the bullet went through at point-blank velocity, at muzzle velocity, so it didn't have time to mushroom. If it hadn't been for that Life Flight and Vanderbilt Medical Center, I wouldn't be here."

And despite everything that happened, Adkins did not press charges against Curtis. He didn't think she actually meant to shoot him, saying she didn't have "any idea what that gun was gonna do."

Adkins even forgives his ex for what happened. He said, "She thought I was indestructible."

Adkins, who is now married to actress Victoria Pratt, would go on to release his debut album two years later. You can watch Von's full interview with the singer below.
