According to NBC Sports analyst Chris Simms, the San Francisco 49ers head coach nearly lost his eye.
Chris Simms Says Kyle Shanahan Was "This Close to Being Permanently Disfigured
On a recent episode of PFT Live, Simms said that Shanahan's wife shared pictures of the coach after the July 14 car accident with him.
"When you first see it, and it's fresh, and some of the cuts are still wide open, I mean, it's jarring," Simms said. "He was this close to maybe losing his right eye."
The 46-year-old Shanahan also suffered a broken nose and hand, fractured ribs, and a facial laceration requiring 40 stitches. He also had a concussion.
"The scar is so big right here," Simms described. "And so all that stuff was just crazy to see."
Simms did not discuss the specifics of the accident. He did reveal that the other driver in the accident was a woman.
"He was emotional about it, because he realized how close it was to being just a complete, you know, utter disaster," added Simms. "It could have been a lot worse. You know, he's very concerned about the woman he got in the accident with and how she is and handling that situation. So there's just a lot there. And I think it was a lot for him to process."
Shanahan Is "Healing"
While Shanahan made an appearance at the 49ers practice yesterday, July 26, he is still "dealing with" the concussion he sustained. However, the coach is working on "healing."
When speaking with the media on Saturday, July 25, 49ers general manager John Lynch admitted that Shanahan will be limited in his ability to coach the Niners throughout their upcoming training camp.
"Kyle basically is going to be like in the protocol," Lynch said. "Doc [Anthony Saglimbeni] and all the great doctors we have are giving him great care. We're going to let you know [his] condition... the doctors dictate how he comes back, when he comes back."
The Palo Alto Police Department shared that neither driver has been cited in the accident.
A spokesperson explained, "There is no impairment suspected, and both drivers remained on scene and were cooperative with the police."
