The Cheers actor said on a recent episode of the Planet Tyrus podcast that those who don't learn about the founding of the United States are at risk of being manipulated.
Kelsey Grammer Wants to Change Education
The warning came as Grammer and the podcast's host, former WWE star Tyrus, were talking about the educational system in the United States. Grammer took issue with those who believe the Founding Fathers were just "old White guys in wigs."
"If you don't know where you come from, you don't know who you are. If you don't know who you are, you can be controlled," said Grammer. "There's a whole bunch of things that just have got to stop with our educational system, and we got to retool it. There's no question."
It should be noted that Grammer is involved in several projects featuring the "old White guys in wigs." One is the film Young Washington, which chronicles the life of the nation's first president before he took office. The other is The Patriot War, a six-episode series about the American Revolution.
"Yeah, I'm pretty tired of the old White guy in [a] wig thing," said Grammer. "I mean, Thomas Jefferson was 33 when he wrote what is arguably the most important political document in the history of man."
Grammer Also Offered Some Historical Insight
The Frasier actor added that the American Revolution began with radical ideas. He added that the Founding Fathers never claimed the nation would be perfect. However, they believed the United States would aspire to be better.
"The land of the possible," said Grammer. "It's always [going to] fall a little short, but that's just it. It's the world of becoming. We're becoming a more perfect union, always, rather than we just are one."
He also noted the sacrifice the Founding Fathers made. He told Tyrus that most of those who signed the Declaration of Independence gave up everything for our country.
Grammer added, "They paid the ultimate sacrifice, the ultimate one. And they would probably do it again. And I think that sort of character is what still is in most of us. I believe in America that way."
