Passengers Describe Search Effort

According to passengers, the ship's captain immediately informed everyone on board that a crew member had gone overboard.

Passenger David Jimenez said the Regal Princess quickly turned around. It then began searching the area where the person had entered the water.

He added that another cruise ship joined the search alongside Mexican maritime authorities.

The passenger said he ship repeatedly slowed down and circled the area where the crew member went overboard as the frantic search unfolded.

"But after searching intensely for over eight hours, the cruise line confirmed the crew member had perished," Jimenez told CBS News Miami.

"No details were given. We don't know who he is."

Jimenez said Princess Cruises kept passengers updated throughout the ordeal. They provided hourly announcements and made grief counseling services available to both guests and crew members.

The ship had been sailing a Western Caribbean itinerary with planned stops in Mexico, Belize, and Honduras.

As a result of the incident, the scheduled stop in Cozumel was canceled while the search and rescue operation took place.
