The preliminary cause of death of South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham as been identified. As we reported on when it happened, he tragically died in his Capitol Hill home on Saturday, July 11.
At the time, we reported that audio footage from the 911 call said someone was suffering with "chest pains". Paramedics arrived to his property at around 8:27pm local time, where he was later pronounced dead.
And now, after an initial investigation from the DC medical examiner's office, his preliminary cause of death has been confirmed.
The cause of death for Lindsey Graham is as follows: "Aortic Dissection due to Arteriosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease." These findings were released by his office.
According to Wikipedia, an aortic dissection refers to the aorta, a key artery for the body, ruptures. This means that blood flows through its separate layers, pulling them apart.
The associated disease, Arteriosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease, is a condition where the arteries in your body start to narrow, according to the Mayo Clinic. That makes blood more difficult to travel through the body, increasing your blood pressure.

The medical examiner's office explained that whilst this was the likely cause, nothing's fully confirmed just yet. Everything that has been released so far does however link up with their initial findings.
But, as they explain, "all the toxicological and microscopic testing" is not finalized. When it is, "the death certificate will be updated to reflect the cause of death and appropriately classify the manner of death."
