Popular Tex-Mex Chain Suddenly Shutters All 150 Locations Nationwide

The Tex-Mex chain is no more after over 4 decades of serving customers. They thanked their customers for being "part of the journey".

Who doesn't enjoy some good old Tex-Mex food? Well, not previous customers of this chain - it's shut its doors for good.

As reported by People, On The Border Mexican Grill & Cantina has took drastic measures. All of its company-owned restaurants in the United States are now shuttered, as of June 12.

The chain was originally founded in Dallas, Texas, in 1982. It offered "border-style Tex-Mex cuisine" - the stuff you'd expect. Fajitas, tacos, margaritas, the standard affair.

But, they had been dealing with some financial troubles. They previously filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in March 2025. Not too long later, they shuttered 70 of its locations.

But On The Border experienced somewhat of an resurgence when Pappas Restaurants bought the chain out. They re-opened 60 locations in the US, and 20 franchised locations in South Korea, according to Fast Company.

The death knell was already sounded for the chain - many of the restaurants that Pappas had re-opened ended up closing their doors in the last year.

Following the closing of all the restaurants, the chain's corporate management group, OTB Hospitality, revealed that they are evaluating the brand's future.

The Tex-Mex Chain Released a Statement About the Closures

The restaurant released a statement about the closures on their website. They explained, "After many years of serving our communities, On the Border Mexican Grill & Cantina has closed its company-owned restaurant locations. This was an incredibly tough decision," they wrote.

They went on to thank their customers as well as staff for being "part of this journey."

Their corporate management group also released a statement following the closure. "On The Border Mexican Grill & Cantina has made the difficult decision to move forward with a significant transition in its restaurant operations, which will include the closing of company-owned locations by end of day Friday, June 12, 2026."

Customers Had Mixed Reactions on Social Media

Whilst some people understood the reasons behind the chain's closing, others said that they'd miss it.

One commenter said, "That's a bummer. I just went to one a few weeks ago," with another saying, "They suck so good"

Others were a little more critical of the restaurant. One commenter explained, "years or cost cutting, s***** service and food ultimately drove them OOB (out of business)," with another lamenting, "40 years and you never fixed the queso-to-chips ratio."
