If you have ever heard sport talk radio in Boston, you know it is practically a contact sport in itself. It's rowdy, raucous, and rich in humor and pungent opinions. Its acknowledged founding father, Eddie Andelman, who has been dubbed "the godfather of sports radio," has died at the age of 89. He was famous, beloved, and a true innovator. His influence and reputation spread far beyond Boston's borders.

According to the Boston Herald, "Andelman, who was on the local radio airwaves for 42 years, helped launch the sports talk radio format that became the model for today."
He Started a Revolutionary Sports Radio Program
Back in 1969, Eddie Andelman launched a freewheeling radio show called Sports Huddle. At the time, it was a groundbreaking venture in radio. People could pick up their phones, call in, and voice their thoughts about the local or national athletic scene. It was the birth of a broadcasting trend that continues to the present day.
Per the outlet, "Over the years, through the Sports Huddle and other venues, Andelman participated in some 13,000 radio broadcasts and over 1,200 television commentaries on channels 5 and 7 as well."
Andelman's Three Sons Posted a Loving Tribute to Their Trailblazing Dad
Writing on the Instagram account of The Phantom Gourmet, a Boston-based restaurant review TV show, Andelman's sons wrote poignantly of their late father. "Eddie Andelman was loved by his wife of fifty seven years, worshipped by his sons, and adored by his grandchildren. From humble roots in Dorchester, he went onto great success in business and broadcasting. Some call him the godfather of sports radio. He certainly changed and elevated the sports radio game."
They added, "Eddie worked tirelessly on the Hot Dog Safari for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation because he loved to give people a great time and he was thankful that his own family was healthy. There would be no Phantom Gourmet without Eddie Andelman. His passion and pride in the work, down to earth and sometimes irreverent style, and the reverence for small business owners and hard working people only enriched our lives and well as many others as well. We learned all that we do from our dad. He was one of a kind. He helped thousands and entertained millions. Eddie Andelman lived a truly incredible life.
