Clover Hill Dairy, an Amish-owned farm store, initially issued a voluntary recall of its cheese products on June 3. That recall and a public health advisory were expanded on June 9.
The cheese products recalled include ricotta, cheddar, Monterey Jack, pepper jack and other varieties, according to a Sunday announcement from the Maryland Department of Health.
"The facility has agreed to initiate a voluntary recall for all of its cheese products," the Maryland Department of Health stated.
Health officials have documented eight cases in multiple states tied to the outbreak, including one death in Maryland in 2023.
Symptoms of a listeria infection depend partly on where in the body it occurs. If it affects the gut, one may experience vomiting, stomach aches and diarrhea.
The germs that cause a listeria infection can also spread through the blood and into the brain and spinal cord. If this happens, one may experience fever and flu-like symptoms, headaches, stiff necks and even seizures, according to the Mayo Clinic.
"Due to the public health risk, the Maryland Department of Health suspended the facility's operating license on May 30, 2026. And is continuing a follow-up evaluation in cooperation with the facility," the health department wrote in a Sunday news release.
Consumers Can Get Full Refund For Recalled Products
Consumers who purchased the recalled cheese should not eat it. Furthermore, all affected products can be returned to the place of purchase for a full refund.
"Clover Hill Dairy board and staff members sincerely apologize for any inconvenience and hardships caused by this recall. We sincerely hope to correct this problem. As soon as it is safely possible," the company said in the June 9 recall notice.
