Is Bungee Jumping Dangerous?
It's important to note that events like this are really a one-in-a-million chance. Although this specific situation was, according to a local familiar with the bungee jumping scene, "the irresponsibility of the team," this is not something that happens often at all.
According to Nayra Freitas, the situation "wasn't simply an accident. It was the basics."
But when you look at the statistics, it's really not a dangerous sport at all, despite how it looks on the surface. According to the ACSH, a surprising 1 in 500,000 jumps goes wrong. That's partly due to how strict the safety regulations are, at least 99.9% of the time.
