Massive Fire Consumes Medical Supply Distribution Facility

An epic inferno engulfed a vast warehouse in Tracy, California, as of Friday. It sent huge, billowing clouds of smoke over the charred rubble of the one-million-square-foot building. According to KCRA3 News, "The fire is burning at the Medline Industries facility in the 5700 block of Promontory Parkway."

Although it may be too soon to know definitively how and precisely where the blaze began, firefighters who got to the warehouse on Thursday afternoon found the roof burning. At least one person seemed to confirm the roof theory. Per the outlet, "South San Joaquin County Fire Authority Chief Randall Bradley said the fire was believed to have started at the roof of the Medline building."

Additionally, there were some circumstances that made dousing the conflagration even harder. "High winds, high temperatures, low humidities made firefighting very difficult," Bradley explained.

Firefighters futilely tried to battle the immense blaze from inside. Nevertheless, they "could not hold the fire," Bradley observed.

Sprinklers and Fire Hydrants Allegedly Did Not Function Correctly

There was still other major impediments. According to the outlet, the facility's sprinklers were not working. Fire hydrants at the scene allegedly lacked water pressure. All these key factors increased the difficulty of fighting this fire successfully.

The warehouse's sprinklers were reportedly tested at the beginning of the year. However, when they failed to work properly now, the giant building went up in flames in less then 40 minutes, according to Deputy Chief Brian Bagley. It was therefore necessary to have "two fire engines to connect to municipal fire lines about 1,600 feet away from the warehouse," per KCRA.

The Size of This Fire Cannot Be Overstated

The building is absolutely mammoth. In fact, ABC7 Eyewitness News called the inferno "one of the largest warehouse fires in the U.S."

"There's been distribution centers that have burned throughout our nation, but to have one, you know, over a million square feet, there's only been two or three that we are aware of, and so it's very, very challenging, you know, you can imagine it's a skyscraper laying on its side," noted Deputy Chief Bagley.

The cause of the enormous warehouse blaze is still being investigated.
