Employees at a Florida thrift store got far more than they expected while sorting through donated items when they discovered what appeared to be a human skull.

The unusual find was made during a routine donation review, a process that typically involves clothing, furniture, and household goods.
Authorities now believe the skull may have been mistakenly donated after being confused for a prop. They are attempting to identify the person who dropped it off.
Human Skull Discovered Among Thrift Store Donations
According to reports, an individual donated several items to the Jericho Ministries Thrift Store in Brooksville on May 16 between 11 a.m. and noon.
Jared Veals, one of the employees who discovered the skull, quickly suspected it was authentic.
"I could tell by seeing where the upper mantles met," he told The Hernando Sun. "On the front of it, it said 'Okinawa 1945 Marine Division,' so I think it was a war trophy."
Hernando County Sheriff's Office Corporal Michael Terry said the skull appears to date back to the World War II era.
Terry emphasized that investigators do not believe any crime was committed in connection with the donation.
"Nothing criminal in nature. We just want to ensure the people who donated realized it was a real skull, not a prop," he said. "[We're] thinking it might have been passed down by a family member."
Authorities are now hoping to locate the donor to learn more about the skull's history and how it ended up at the store.
Investigators Seek Clues About Skull's Origins
According to the report, one theory is that the skull may have once been used as an educational tool in a medical setting.
The Museum of British Colonialism notes that real human skeletons were commonly used in medical schools well into the 1980s.
The Hernando County Sheriff's Office later issued a public appeal on Facebook, asking anyone with information about the donation to come forward.
"Up until the mid-80's real skeletons were used in medical schools," one social media user commented. "Someone may have gotten their hands on one and used it as a Halloween decoration or something. They may or may not have realized it was real."
"In school decades ago, they assigned real skulls to their future medical students," another added. "It might not be as insidious as it appears."
Jericho Road Ministries, which operates multiple thrift stores throughout Hernando County and recently expanded with a new location in Hudson, has not publicly commented on the discovery.
For now, investigators continue to search for answers surrounding one of the more unusual donations the store has ever received.
