Unfortunately, the loss was only part of what turned out to be a rough night for New York City. Outside of Madison Square Garden, trouble had erupted before the final whistle had even been blown. Thousands of Knicks fans were gathered near the Manhattan fan zone for a watch party, where scenes turned violent.
Hundreds of videos showcased the mayhem on the streets of New York. Some fans were shown fighting each other. Some others set about crowds elsewhere in the event. Elsewhere, fans were climbing on and destroying vehicles.
You can imagine the scene, as thousands of success-starved Knicks fans lost their minds as their team struggled to push for its 14th consecutive win. As such, NYPD was forced to intervene, using pepper spray to try and disperse the sizeable crowds from the area.
Tensions in New York were already high, as parts of the city had been shut down due to the arrival of President Trump, who became the first sitting President to attend an NBA Finals game.
The New York Knicks Are Still in the Driver's Seat
Despite their loss on Monday, the Knicks are still in the driver's seat. Mike Brown's team holds a 2-1 lead over the Spurs and has a second home game to play before heading back to San Antonio for Game 5. New York only needs two more wins to secure a long-awaited championship.
However, no lead in the NBA is safe, especially when Victor Wembanyama is on the opposing side of the floor. As such, the Knicks must win Game 4 if they want to travel back to Texas with full control of the series. Otherwise, things will be all tied up and well-positioned for the momentum to swing in the opposite direction.
New York has been waiting a long time for a moment like this one. That's why some fans are so excited about the situation. With that excitement often comes overzealous mistakes. So, if the Knicks do win a championship, be prepared for some truly memorable, yet scary, scenes on the streets of the Big Apple.
