What Happened During the NBA Finals?

In case you missed it, the incident with the fan occurred in the middle of the fourth quarter of Game 1 of the NBA Finals on Wednesday, June 3.

At the time, the Knicks led the Spurs 92-86. The fan then raced onto the court and stopped to take a pic next to Victor Wembanyama.

Security quickly moved the fan off the court. The replay showed the reigning Defensive Player of the Year laughing at the incident.

"I've never been in that situation," said Wembanyama. "I didn't know how to act. It really surprised me, almost as much as that time a bat crossed the court."

The center referenced the time an actual bat flew onto the court during a matchup between the Spurs and the Minnesota Timberwolves on Jan. 28, 2024. The Spurs' mascot eventually caught the winged creature.

This Might Have Been Part of a Crypto Scheme

As reported by News 4 San Antonio, the fan was apprehended after being escorted off the court. He and another individual are now banned from all NBA events for life.

The Bexar County Sheriff's Office stated that the minor was arrested for violating Texas Penal Code 42.05. He interfered with a lawful gathering, specifically the NBA Finals game, by engaging in physical interference.

The authorities stated he was arrested for committing criminal trespass. By running onto the court without the owner's consent, he violated Texas Penal Code 30.05. The officers added that the entry involved the "intrusion of his entire body into the restricted area."

Investigators believe the fan's stunt at the NBA Finals wasn't just about getting some likes on the 'Gram. It appears to be part of an effort to promote a crypto scheme. Reportedly, the goal is to generate attention to the digital coin to attract investors and boost its value, only to cash out and leave buyers with a worthless currency.
