Grocery Department at Target Location Closed Due to Rat Infestation

The last thing you expect when shopping for your Target groceries is a rat there peeking back at you. But that might be what you get.

The last thing you expect when shopping for your Target groceries is a rat there peeking back at you. But as it turns out, that might be what you get.

At least, that was the experience of some Target customers at a Bay Area location. According to the New York Post, the store near North Capitol Avenue and McKee Road in San Jose was absolutely plagued with rats.

According to health authorities, rodent droppings and opened bags of food were found littered throughout the warehouse of the Target. The health report says that "chewed food packages" were commonplace.

The health report added, "The premises of each food facility must be maintained free of vermin. A facility cannot operate if there is a vermin infestation that leads to contamination of food contact surfaces, packaging, utensils, food equipment, or adulteration of food."

A sign posted out front of the California Target reads, "DUE TO TEMPORARY SUSPENSION OF HEALTH PERMIT THIS FOOD FACILITY IS CLOSED."

"This facility was found to have violations which constitute an immediate danger to public health or safety. As a result, the permit to operate has been temporarily suspended... This facility has been ordered to remain closed until a written reinstatement of permit has been issued."

Target Released a Statement About the Situation

The statement from Target reads, "The safety and well-being of our guests and team members is Target's highest priority, and we've temporarily stopped selling food items at our San Jose Capitol store to allow for cleaning and sanitizing, following reports of pest activity in this location."

"Additionally, we're working with the local health department to ensure the concern is addressed quickly."

"[We] invite our guests to visit our nearby store at 1750 Story Rd for food needs. We appreciate the efforts of our team and partners to resolve this situation for our guests."

But, officials said, "The facility has not requested a follow-up inspection. Facilities can re-open immediately following an inspection that confirms the problem was resolved,"

Here's hoping the issue gets resolved quickly.
