In a heartbreaking update, Rodriguez's family has confirmed that he has been taken off life support.

According to his grandmother, the teenager has passed away after spending several days in critical condition.

News 4 San Antonio reported that family members remained hopeful even after doctors informed them that Rodriguez had been declared brain dead.

His uncle, Moses, said the family saw "a glimmer of hope" when they witnessed Joey moving his knees and thumbs in response to their voices.

However, after difficult conversations with doctors, the family came to terms with the devastating reality of his injuries.

"We were praying for a miracle," Moses said. "Under the circumstances I know he would want us to be religious, and he would want us to keep our faith."

Rodriguez was reportedly declared legally brain dead before 4 p.m. on Monday.

His loved ones considered moving him to a long-term care facility. They ultimately made the difficult decision to remove him from life support on Tuesday afternoon.

"My grandson Joey has finally found eternal peace," Rodriguez's grandmother, Denise, wrote on social media. "He's now in the loving presence of our Lord Jesus Christ."

"Thank you, everyone, for all your heartfelt prayers, sincerity, and unwavering love. My grandson Joey will forever be alive in our hearts. May his spirit soar high. Mama Deedee's heart will always cherish and love you, grandson."

According to family members, Rodriguez was sitting on the passenger-side window of a vehicle when it struck a curb. He fell to the pavement and suffered a severe head injury.

The teen was rushed to a nearby clinic, where he reportedly had no pulse for eight minutes. He was then transferred to a local trauma center due to the severity of his condition.
