'The Madison' Actor Said People Told Him His Career Was Over After Move to Colorado

There are a few centers of all the action in the acting world. One is Los Angeles. Another is Hollywood. A third is New York. Anyplace else is probably considered off the grid. It's like a country singer not being in Nashville. It can impact a career. Actor Kurt Russell says that when he moved to Colorado, he was warned that it would backfire on him professionally. However, the star of The Madison clearly loves it there. It took guts and independence to make the geographic shift, but he did it.

Per People, Russell said, "What I want to look at, what I want to be a part of — all the things that Colorado has to offer. I wanted to eventually get into the ranching life." He and his longtime love, Goldie Hawn, have a log-cabin lodge. Sounds like a throwback to the good old frontier days! In fact, Russell said, "When Goldie and I got together, a couple of years later, we both built a ranch there together, where our family has grown up. That was 40 years ago."

Russell Lives Where He and Goldie Hawn Are Happy

Kurt Russell admits he was cautioned about the wisdom of being physically out of the mainstream. He downplayed the red flags. "I wasn't escaping. I was just living where I live...But when I did it, nobody else was doing that." Russell says that people admonished him about the potential damage to his career. They reportedly said to him, "'Well, that's goodbye. That's it.' I said, 'Well, we'll see.'" He was right.

A Massachusetts native, Russell, now 75, shared that he has nothing against Los Angeles. Nevertheless, getting away from the hectic urban hubbub was the best choice for him and Goldie Hawn, 80. "I don't dislike L.A. It's just not my preference in terms of how I like to live my life. You've got to understand something about the area of Old Snowmass. Everybody who lives there, they live there because they want to. I can't say that about L.A."

He Likes Colorado for Raising Kids

Russell also mentioned the advantages that Colorado has for child-rearing. "It's very different from living in a city. They [their children from their own relationship and from previous ones] grew up with a good dose of what nature can offer. There are difficulties to it, but there are also great rewards to it. I'm just more comfortable there."
