Spoiler alert: The pain wasn't because of the nachos.
The Texas-based mother then received a surprise over Memorial Day weekend. As reported by PEOPLE, she gave birth to twins. We have the details below.
It Was a Camping Trip to Remember
Dugger-Kemp was camping with her family near the Texas-Oklahoma border when she experienced severe stomach pains. To be on the safe side, the 30-year-old mom, who was 31 weeks and two days pregnant, asked her husband's grandmother, Mimi, to drive her to the hospital.
Initially, the then-mother of 4 didn't think anything about the pain. But as they approached the hospital, she realized that the stomach pains were actually contractions. That's when Dugger-Kemp realized she was in "deep trouble."
She said, "I was like, 'Mimi, don't panic, but I'm about to have these babies in the car.' She said, 'Oh no, Shelbee,' and I said, 'Oh yes, Mimi, it's about to happen.'"
And there in the passenger seat, Dugger-Kemp gave birth to her twin sons, Kane and Kallan. Kane came first, with Kallan arriving five minutes later.
One of the Twins Had A Rare Type of Birth
As if Dugger-Kemp didn't already have a great story to tell, Kallan was born en caul. This is an extremely rare type of birth where the baby is still in the amniotic sac.
Dugger-Kemp's husband learned of his twin sons' arrival from his sister-in-law, who had contacted Mimi for the gate code to the campsite.
"When she picked up, she was crying," said Dugger-Kemp.
While they were expected to arrive in July, both twins were born healthy. Kane weighed 4 lbs., 4 oz., while Kallan weighed 3 lbs., 15 oz. They also didn't need oxygen, which surprised the doctor.
Doctors placed Kane and Kallan in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), which is standard for preemies, so they can receive the specialized care they need.
Reflecting on the experience, Dugger-Kemp said, "Everyone keeps asking me how I knew what to do, and I don't know. Your body just kicks into gear."
