College Football Player Dies at 18 After Fatal Shooting

Gavin Yates-Lyons, a freshman defensive back for Ball State, has died at the age of 18, the school confirmed.

Yates-Lyons was shot in a parking garage on May 24 during an incident that injured two others. According to ?The Tallahassee Democrat, Yates-Lyons was caught in a ?crossfire in the garage adjacent to ?off-campus apartments for Florida State University students.

He was taken ?to a local hospital in critical condition, but died on Saturday.

"We extend sincere condolences to his family, friends, coaches, teammates and all who held him close. May you find comfort and strength during this challenging moment," the school wrote on X.

Gavin Yates-Lyons Was Shot the Day After His Graduation

According to the Muncie Star Press, Yates-Lyons returned home to attend his high school graduation ceremony the day before the shooting.

Yates-Lyons attended Lowndes High School in Valdosta, Georgia. The 18-year-old football standout graduated early in December 2025 to participate in spring workouts with Ball State.

"Gavin was an extraordinary person. And it is difficult to express the grief we all feel," Ball State football chief of staff Pete Roley 

A GoFundMe fundraiser has been created to assist his family with funeral expenses.

"Tragically, the morning after his graduation, Gavin was caught in the crossfire of a shooting and suffered critical injuries," according to the GoFundMe. "Despite the efforts of medical professionals and the countless prayers offered on his behalf, Gavin unfortunately succumbed to his injuries."

"While our hearts are broken by this tremendous loss. We find comfort in knowing that Gavin is now resting with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in Heaven."

According to his family, Yates-Lyons became an organ donor to help save the lives of others.

The fatal incident is under investigation.
