Oscar-Winning “Secret Weapon” Behind ‘Star Wars’ and George Lucas’ Ex-Wife, Marcia Lucas, Dies at 80

The Oscar-winning woman who edited some of the first and most iconic 'Star Wars' films has passed away following a battle with cancer.

Marcia Lucas, who was most well-known for being the editor behind some of the most iconic Star Wars movies, has died at the age of 80. According to The Sun, she tragically passed away following a battle with cancer.

In a statement, her family announced her passing. They said she died on Wednesday, May 27. In a statement, they described her as a "trailblazer" and "a force".

The statement said, "A true trailblazer for women in film and one of the most influential editors in cinematic history". She was most well-known for editing Star Wars: A New Hope as well as Return of the Jedi.

She also helped edit the breakthrough movie of her ex-husband, George Lucas, American Graffiti, in 1973. For that film, she received an Academy Award nomination. And she received one in 1977 for Best Film Editing for Star Wars.

Her family's statement continued, "She will be remembered as a brilliant storyteller, an incredible friend, a loving mother, a generous host, and a woman whose humor and sparkle filled every room she entered."

"Her influence on film is indelible, but those who knew her best will remember something even greater: the way she made life feel more vivid, more beautiful, more fun, and more full of love."

After she divorced George Lucas in 1983, she remarried to Tom Rodrigues, a stained glass artist, that same year. Marcia is survived by her daughters and granddaughters.

Tributes Have Flooded in for the 'Star Wars' Editor

Emotional tributes to the iconic film editor have flooded in on social media.

Lucasfilm posted a tribute to her work on social media. They wrote, "Everyone at Lucasfilm was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Marcia Lucas... We join the global filmmaking community in mourning her loss."

Commenters on social media also praised her editing prowess, with one writing that she "was the one that put the magic touch on Star Wars." Another commenter wrote, "She was instrumental in the first Star Wars and that's why it's the best."

Rest in peace to an absolute legend. As one commenter put it, "requiescat en pace lady Jedi."
