The family of Dana Weinger has spoken out after the South Carolina wife died in a tragic freak umbrella accident during severe storms.

The family of a South Carolina woman killed in a freak umbrella accident has spoken out following the heartbreaking tragedy.

Dana Weinger, 56, died on Saturday, May 23, after a dislodged umbrella struck her neck and severed her carotid artery.

Reports state that severe storms swept through the area over the weekend, with a powerful gust of wind sending the umbrella airborne.

The tragic incident happened at Driftwood Grill in Summerton.

Wife Dies After Freak Umbrella Accident During Storm

Friends and family have since paid emotional tributes to Weinger, describing her as a deeply loved and caring person.

Cameron Weinger, the son of Weinger's husband Frank, shared a heartfelt message following her death.

"I love you forever Mrs. Dana. I'm so sorry," he wrote.

"Just because y'all are no longer here with us doesn't mean y'all won't live through us," he added.

"Y'all both made such a great impact on everyone y'all came in contact with and there's nothing in the world that could make up for what has happened."

Close friend Heather Iosa also shared an emotional tribute.

"Dana has been there with me through thick and then. I'm so glad we had dinner just two weeks ago and I got to see you," Iosa wrote.

"She has the biggest heart ever and I'm going to miss her so very much."

Restaurant Shares Statement After Tragedy

Authorities say Weinger had been dining with her husband when the incident unfolded at around 7:40 PM.

Despite desperate life-saving efforts at the scene, Weinger died from her injuries roughly an hour later.

Investigators have since launched an accidental death investigation into the incident.

Officials at the Medical University of South Carolina are expected to conduct an autopsy on Wednesday, May 27.

Driftwood Grill later shared a statement on social media addressing the tragedy.

"Our hearts are with the family, friends, and loved ones affected by the tragic incident during last night's sudden severe weather event at Lake Marion," the restaurant said.

"This has deeply affected many people in our community, including guests, staff, first responders, and everyone involved. Out of respect for the family and those impacted, we ask for continued prayers, compassion, and privacy during this incredibly difficult time."

The restaurant concluded the statement by saying, "Please continue to keep everyone affected in your thoughts and prayers."
