Iconic Creators of 'Barbie Girl' Announce Band Split After Almost 30 Years

The band behind the iconic eurodance hit "Barbie Girl" have split up after being around for over three decades.

I've got to assume the vast majority of Americans have at least heard "Barbie Girl" by Aqua. It's a europop classic that really broke the mold. In case you know the song, and not its name (to be fair, the song's title is featured heavily in the lyrics), it goes:

"I'm a Barbie girl in the Barbie world / Life in plastic, it's fantastic / You can brush my hair, undress me everywhere / Imagination, life is your creation / Come on, Barbie, let's go party". It's a real ear-worm, right?

Well, it's been a pretty long run for the band behind the hit. Aqua, the Danish-Norwegian hitmakers, have been around for over three decades now. And, as reported by E!News, they've finally decided to throw in the towel.

They announced their split via a post on social media. The band, who's most recent iteration consisted of René Dif, Søren Rasted and Lene Nystrøm, explained, "After many incredible years, we have decided to close the chapter of AQUA as a live band."

They conitnued, "AQUA has been such a huge part of our lives... And together we've had the chance to experience more than we ever dared to dream of."

But, Aqua thanked their fans for being around for all this time. "We've traveled the world countless times, met so many wonderful people, sung together with millions of you, and shared memories that we will carry with us forever."

But, on a good note, they announced things weren't ending suddenly. They explained the band will be winding down rather than quitting outright.

'Barbie Girl' Was a Hit, But the Company Behind Barbie Didn't Like It...

Of course, Aqua is most well known for their hit "Barbie Girl". But, did you know that it didn't resonate so well with Mattel, the creators of the iconic Barbies themselves?

That's right - Mattel ended up deciding to sue the band. They argued that the doll's trademark was violated. Luckily, the whole case ended up getting dismissed in court. But there was still a long, long legal process before that happened.

We're sad to see the "Barbie Girl" hitmakers split - but they have a lasting legacy. We hope they enjoy their Barbie parties now they're out of the public eye a little more!
