Country Singer Says She Knew Marriage Was a Mistake on Her Wedding Night

There have been some famously brief marriages in the entertainment world. For example, Cher and Gregg Allman were only united in wedlock for nine days. Renee Zellweger and Kenny Chesney threw in the towel after four months. Then there is country singer Carly Pearce. In a very frank and introspective interview on the podcast The Person Who Believed in Me, Pearce got candid about her extremely brief marriage to Michael Ray. They were husband and wife for just eight months. To her, the marriage was over even sooner. Nevertheless, some positive things came out of it.

It sounds like Pearce knew almost from the get-go that it would not work out well. She did not waste time hanging around wistfully hoping that things would get better. In fact, Carly Pearce said, "I blew up my life to get out of it. I didn't stay because society tells you 'you should.' I didn't stay because my faith says divorce is bad. I didn't stay because 'oh, it's public. I need to do that.' I was done."

Pearce Made up Her Mind Fast To Walk Away From the Marriage

The singer mentioned in the interview that she realized on her wedding night that her marriage to Michael Ray was all wrong for her. Pearce even admitted that "he made it very clear that I made a big mistake." How disheartening and disappointing that must have been for her. It would be a crushing emotional blow for anyone.

However, Pearce eventually found her voice, quite literally. And it's a strong, clear voice, too. That unfortunate marital experience, she said, led to the creation of her album 29. A track from it, "Never Wanted To Be That Girl," earned Pearce a Grammy for Best Country Duo/Group Performance.

The Marriage and Its Aftermath "Taught Me a Lot About Myself"

She explained, "And that's something I'm very grateful for my very short marriage [to Michael Ray], because it taught me a lot about myself. It also gave me the album 29." Additionally, Pearce learned how resilient she could be when faced with major adversity. She is a true survivor.

She also understood that her songs about divorce were relevant to many people, not only her. Carly Pearce added, "I thought it was just my story, but I think what I learned is it was a lot of different people's story."
