David Letterman was never shy about expressing himself. During his late night TV career, he launched his fair share of barbs at various targets. He was apparently glad to help Stephen Colbert get a few digs in at CBS mere days before his own nighttime show goes dark for good on Thursday, May 21. Letterman found a novel - and naughty - way to poke the network in the eye quite literally.

He and Colbert both climbed to the roof of The Ed Sullivan Theater. The Late Show with Stephen Colbert takes place there. Then the two gleefully launched a bunch of chairs, watermelons, and even a tiered cake off their high perch. The bull's eye directly on the ground below was a large mock-up of the CBS eye logo.
"This Brings True Joy to My Heart"
When each item they flung hit it, a cascade of brightly colored balls poured out. They made a huge mess. And the men had no remorse whatsoever about it. In fact, David Letterman said, "I thought this occasion would be sad, but this brings true joy to my heart. We are up here for the wanton destruction of CBS property." To paraphrase Dylan Thomas's famous poem, Stephen Colbert will not go gently into that good night!
At the end of their prank, David Letterman said to Stephen Colbert, "Thank you for everything you've done for our country." He added to CBS, "In the words of the great Ed Murrow, good night and good luck, mother------!"
Other Late Night Hosts Are Evidently Supporting Stephen Colbert as He Exits
The cancellation of Stephen Colbert's show has been highly controversial since CBS announced it last year. Some attributed it to politics. Colbert has been a vigorous and unabashed critic of President Donald Trump. For their part, the network said it was a financial decision.
Colbert's late night counterparts Seth Meyers, Jimmy Fallon, John Oliver, and Jimmy Kimmel were his guests recently, per Fox News Digital. They are all seemingly in his corner. Kimmel has also found himself in hot water because of remarks he made. His show on ABC was actually benched for several days last year when he commented on the assassination of Charlie Kirk.
