While trying to land on the runway, a small Bearhawk LSA-8X plane turned on its head and flipped over. As reported by the New York Post, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) stated the incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. local time.
Is the Pilot of the Small Plane OK?
First responders rushed to the south side of runway 24 at the airport. According to the Barnstable Police Department, the pilot was found upside down inside the plane.
The Hyannis Fire Department assessed the pilot, who suffered only minor injuries. Photos reveal the silver plane was apparently undamaged.
As a result of the incident, the airport shut down operations for nearly an hour. The unconventional landing also caused a small fuel leak, which seeped into the nearby field.
This Incident Follows A Similar Landing Last Month
On April 12, drivers in Phoenix, Arizona, witnessed a plane crash on a busy city street in the middle of the afternoon.
Firefighters were then called out to the intersection of 7th Street and Missouri Avenue in the city's Uptown neighborhood after the aircraft made a "forced landing."
Reports indicated that three people were on board the Republic RC-3 when it landed around 3:25 p.m. local time. The National Transportation Safety Board found the emergency was caused by engine problems.
According to Federal Aviation Administration spokesperson Rick Breitenfeldt, the agency is investigating the incident.
No one on the plane or in the nearby community was severely injured. The craft avoided any collisions with other vehicles and pedestrians on the busy roadway. No power lines were damaged. However, the plane did strike a fire hydrant on its way down.
Even more remarkable is that the passengers sustained only minor injuries. None were hospitalized. Phoenix Fire Department Captain DJ Lee said that the fact that no one was hurt was a "miracle."
