The crowd watched the incident in disbelief during the 36-year-old's match in the final qualifying round of the Copa Chenel in the Comunidad de Madrid region in Spain.
What Happened to the Bullfighter?
Duran was launched into the air several times by the bull. The animal then thrust its horns into the bullfighter's groin.
The audience was horrified by what they witnessed. Yet they were amazed he was able to walk away from the animal.
According to The Sun, Duran was rushed to the hospital, where doctors performed emergency surgery to treat the injuries sustained in his groin. Subsequently, a blood clot was discovered in his leg, requiring a second operation to remove it.
Duran is now recovering in intensive care. His condition is stable and improving.
This Is One of Many Recent Incidents Involving Bullfighters
Jose Antonio Morante de la Puebla, better known to his fans as the "King of Bullfighters," just came out of retirement only to endure two hours of surgery after a recent performance.
Thousands of fans evacuated the Maestranza bullring in Seville, Spain, after they witnessed the 46-year-old Morante de la Puebla at the business end of a bull's horn on Monday, April 20.
The tip of the horn plunged into the bullfighter's rectum. As reported by the New York Post, it left a 4-inch hole. Morante de la Puebla clutched his rear end as he was carried out of the ring by four other matadors.
The bullfighter then underwent prolonged surgery at a local medical facility. Hospital staff reported the rectum was fully severed, necessitating reconstruction of the rectal wall and sphincter.
Morante de la Puebla has not indicated if he will return to the ring.
Despite the level of danger involved with the sport, Spain still holds around 1,500 bullfights each year. While numbers have declined in recent years, the matches are traditionally tied to religious festivals.
