Dion Anderson, who was best known for starring in critically acclaimed film The Shawshank Redemption, tragically died Sunday, April 26. According to Cleveland, he was 87 years old.
Dion Anderson was born in Cameron County, Texas. While he was most well known for his acting career, he also worked in many other disciplines. According to his obituary, he achieved a bachelor's degree in English literature as well as three master's degrees in disciplines ranging from history to political science and art.
The Shawshank Redemption star also served in the military. He served in the Vietnam War, where he helped to set up television facilities and train staff on how to use them in South Vietnam. Anderson also worked with the Foreign Service in Iran, where he taught English and produced plays. He was also instrumental in helping develop TV networks there, too.
But it was after his time in the military when he went fully into acting. His first American theater gig was in an opera house in West Virginia. But, he was most well known for starring in blockbuster films. Shawshank Redemption was his most prominent role, where he starred as Head Bull Haig, one of the supporting prison guards. He also starred in episodes of the X-Files.

Anderson is survived by his wife, Lucinda, as well as his two children, five grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
