A Missouri State Highway Patrol probable cause statement outlines the events that followed.
When officers arrived at the residence, they found the victim dead inside the home. Sweeney and the victim's husband were both at the scene.
According to the statement, Sweeney's grandfather said the suspect sat next to Gayle on the couch for "approximately 30 minutes".
He then suddenly "without warning shot [the grandmother] in the head".

Officers took Sweeney into custody following the incident, where they reportedly found a "holster" on him.
Authorities have requested that he be held without bond, according to an arrest warrant.
His next court appearance is scheduled for Wednesday, May 6.
