Embattled Patriots Coach Named Most Influential Bostonian by Boston Magazine

Mike Vrabel is the New England Patriots head coach who helped his team go from chumps to champs in the course of just one Cinderella season. He has been embroiled in a messy controversy involving ex-NFL reporter Dianna Russini for weeks. The two were photographed hugging and holding hands at a luxury resort in Arizona. Both are married to other people. They have each denied any inappropriate relationship.

Page Six published those headline-making pics on April 7. The massive rumpus they caused has kept going ever since. Eyebrows went up. Jaws went down. More photos of the pair seeming cozy have emerged as well. In a real shocker, Dianna Russini abruptly quit her job at The Athletic. Mike Vrabel missed part of the recent NFL draft to seek counseling.

However, he just got some good news. Boston Magazine named him Most Influential Bostonian of 2026, an accolade he shares with wunderkind QB Drake Maye. It's unclear whether Vrabel was chosen for that distinction before the Russini situation came to light. However, he is referred to by Boston Magazine as "a man who isn't afraid to go to counseling...." so it appears that Vrabel was picked despite the ongoing turmoil.

The Publication Rhapsodized About Mike Vrabel and Drake Maye

In its essay about the coach and the quarterback, Boston Magazine trilled their praises. To clarify, whatever is or is not happening in Mike Vrabel's private life does not diminish his remarkable accomplishments for the Patriots. He helmed a formerly struggling squad and made those players believe they could win. And win they did. Again and again. They scrambled their way to the biggest game of all. Even though the Patriots lost the Super Bowl, they proved they are worthy contenders who fought hard for every point.

Of Vrabel and Maye, Boston Magazine wrote, "And into that gray, grinding misery [of the past winter] stepped Vrabel and Maye—and gave this city something it had no right to expect: joy. That was their gift. And it transcended football...they showed this city what it looks like to overcome adversity—on the field and off. For a city that needed it, the joy was real. That doesn't go away."

Some Scoffed at the Choice of Vrabel

People bluntly voiced their feelings about the choice of Mike Vrabel. The remarks many of them posted on Boston Magazine's

Facebook page were pretty scathing. However, some were more forgiving and compassionate.

"Is this satire? Genuinely can't tell"

"Can you imagine the look on the editor's face when they walked into his office a couple of weeks ago on that number one pick"

"Hey, nice timing on the Vrabel cover, Boston Magazine! LOL"

"Kudos to still publishing that cover and list after all the drama!"

"His personal life is nobody but him and his families business. His job is completely separate . Let him have privacy and support to work on his personal life NOT his Patriots life."
