1 Dead After Car Crashes into Spectators at Rally

A rally car was driving into a sharp bend when it lost control on Sunday, April 19. The vehicle flipped multiple times and crashed into spectators. One person died, and two others were injured in the incident.

What Happened During the Car Crash?

PEOPLE reports that the car crash occurred during the second round of the FIA Codasur Rally Championship at Rally Sudamericano Mina Clavero in Argentina. 

Footage of the incident has gone viral online. It shows people yelling as the car goes off course and flips into the air. A woman was seen lying on the ground, screaming. 

Reports state that a 25-year-old man was rushed to the hospital. He later died. A 40-year-old woman's leg was broken. Her daughter, a minor, suffered minor injuries. 

Was the Event Suspended?

The FIA confirmed in one statement that it had suspended the remainder of the event. 

The organization shared its "deepest sympathies and sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased, and our thoughts remain with all those injured and affected."

"We thank the emergency services and medical teams for their rapid response," it continued. "The FIA ??will provide its full support to the organizers of Rally Sudamericano Mina Clavero, Automóvil Club Argentino (ACA), CODASUR, and the relevant local authorities in their investigation into the incident."

The FIA then shared another statement on Facebook. It read, "The FIA ??is deeply saddened by the tragic incident that occurred today during Round 2 of the FIA ??CODASUR Rally Championship at Rally Sudamericano Mina Clavero, in which one spectator lost their life, and two others were injured." 

This moment comes a day after we reported that professional racing driver Juha Miettinen, 66, died following a seven-car crash during a race in Germany.

The incident occurred on Saturday, April 18, during qualifying for the Nürburgring Langstrecken-Serie (NLS). The race was immediately halted following the incident. Officials suspended the race entirely one hour later.

Race organizers released a statement: "Despite the immediate arrival of emergency services, the emergency medics were unable to save the driver involved after he had been extracted from the vehicle. The driver died at the medical centre after all attempts at resuscitation proved unsuccessful."
