The US embassy in a popular Caribbean getaway spot has advised potential holidaymakers to avoid the country. As reported by the New York Post, the reasons behind the warning are pretty serious.
The US Embassy in Trinidad and Tobago made the shocking announcement this Thursday, April 16. They released a new travel advisory for American tourists, which says that potential travelers should "reconsider travel to Trinidad and Tobago due to crime."
As well as this, they also cited a "heightened risk of terrorism." This comes after a long-lasting state of emergency was enacted in the island nation starting March 2. The emergency means that the Trinidad and Tobago Police can enter and search any property.
However, the most concerning part is that bail has been suspended. This means that anyone who is arrested will be kept in custody without any way of leaving.
They added that "although violent crime in Trinidad and Tobago has dropped greatly since 2024 due to security efforts started during the previous state of emergencies, crime remains a challenge throughout the country." They also added that Tobago is generally safer than Trinidad.

The US Embassy Named Some Popular Spots in the Caribbean Getaway To Avoid
Authorities have said that Americans should specifically avoid certain parts of the capital city Port of Spain. These areas include Laventille, Piccadilly Street, and Besson Street, as well as Beetham, Sea Lots, Cocorite, and the interior of Queen's Park Savannah.
They have also warned against going to other areas in the popular getaway at night. Many beaches were named as off-limits, as well as the downtown area of the capital.
Vacationers have voiced their worries about the getaway on social media. One wrote, "My heart actually feels broken, and I feel a bit hopeless about crime in T&T," with another writing, "I am seriously worried about my close family, as [crime] can hit anyone now."
But the US isn't the only country who have warned about terrorist risks in Trinidad and Tobago. Other countries that have issued severe travel warnings include the UK and Canada.
We hope that everyone is safe.
