The Unlikely Bond That Beach Boys' Brian Wilson Formed With One Country Legend

Brian Wilson was a music industry legend. He helped to propel the Beach Boys to everlasting stardom with lively, classic songs like "Good Vibrations," "Kokomo," and "Surfin' USA." Those tracks defined an era and a whole generation of rockers. When Wilson died last year at the age of 82, he was deeply mourned by musicians and fans alike. However, there were elements of his remarkable life that are coming into sharper focus now. One of them was his friendship with a country music icon - the late Glen Campbell.

Brian Wilson had "a nervous breakdown in the mid-1960s," per People. He therefore stepped back from the band for a time. Enter Glen Campbell, who temporarily filled in for Wilson until April 24, 1065. He excelled as a session guitarist and was on the Beach Boys' landmark 1966 album Pet Sounds.

Campbell Admitted That He Did Not Know the Lyrics of Their Songs

Although Glen Campbell was a deft musician, there was one thing lacking. He was not familiar with the words to all the Beach Boys' songs. In author Keith Badman's 2004 book on the popular band, The Beach Boys: The Definitive Diary of America's Greatest Band on Stage and in the Studio, Campbell 'fessed up about his spotty grasp of the words to the Beach Boys' tunes.

"The only problem was, I didn't know all the words to the songs. They'd be singing 'Pasadena,' and I'd be singing something else. I didn't know what I was saying. But the screams were so loud from the girls, you'd walk onstage, and you couldn't hear a thing anyway."

Wilson Offered a Song to Campbell

Per the outlet, the song, "Guess I'm Dumb," was passed over by the band. It was penned by Wilson with Russ Titelman. He graciously suggested that Campbell take it. He reflected, "Brian [said], 'Glen, you want to sing it?' " recalled Campbell. "I said, 'Sure, I do.' Because I kind of liked it. It was a great track, and the guys already had some background on it." Brian Wilson, along with Carl Wilson, pitched in on that track.

The Bittersweet Final Time They Worked Together

Per the outlet, seven years after Glen Campbell died, an album showcasing his duets "and reworked songs" was released. It was called Glen Campbell Duets - Ghost on the Canvas Sessions. Brian Wilson blended his singing with Campbell's on a song titled "Strong."

He generously paid tribute to his late friend, who passed away in 2017. "Glen was a great singer and a great guy.. Our intention in doing 'Strong' was to echo back to 'Guess I'm Dumb' and the times that Glen and I worked together. It's kinda got that vibe to it, and I dig the sound of it."
