The blockbuster duet that Ella Langley did with Riley Green in 2024, "You Look Like You Love Me," became a monster hit. It grabbed prestigious honors including some from the ACM and CMA, plus garnering loads of fans. The Wild West-era video is fun to watch as well. Both Langley and Green ham it up gleefully in a saloon setting, along with Jamey Johnson, who enters the fray as a crusty sheriff. However, there is a story behind that song which you may not know about. Langley actually had to go to bat versus her label to record it the way she preferred. Turns out she was absolutely right!

Langley Dished About What She Went Through To Record the Song
When Ella Langley was a guest on the podcast This Past Weekend with Theo Von, she went into detail about how she battled her label over that song. The sticking point? The spoken verses. That technique did not appeal to her bosses. Much of the novelty and charm of "You look Like You Love Me" comes from those verses. They also connect the song to country music's illustrious past, which features many outstanding spoken songs.
Langley shared, "Everyone told me that song was not going to work. They were all like, 'What?' After we cut it, [the label] was like, 'We really think you need to go back in and sing these verses.' I was like, 'I'm not singing it.' And they were like, 'You need to sing it.'"
Nevertheless, Langley hung in there. She did not cave to their demands. The singer told Theo Von, "I just fought 'em really hard on it. They were like, 'This is going to be the worst-performing song on the record.'"
She Truly Believed in the Song
Langley clarified to Theo Von why she felt so strongly about the way the song was presented. It was not only a musical or stylistic issue for her. It was a matter of Langley's professional integrity and authenticity being on the line too.
"I didn't know what it was gonna do, but I believed that it was different. I believed it was something that made me smile and I enjoyed singing it and like I said, once I put my mind to something, if I go in and cut something, it's because I believe in it."
Ella Langley's sophomore LP, Dandelion, is scheduled to drop on Friday, April 10.
