The Royal Bahamas Police Force shared that the woman, who was visiting the island with her husband, was swept out to sea by strong currents after falling from their 8-foot hard-bottom boat. The couple had traveled about 2.5 miles from Hope Town to Elbow Cay.

A Harrowing Ordeal in the Bahamas

Authorities say the incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. local time on Saturday, April 4. The woman fell overboard with the boat's keys, causing the dinghy's engine to eventually shut off.

The woman's husband said that he couldn't see his wife in the rough surf. He then paddled the small disabled boat to the shore. He eventually made it to the Marsh Harbour Boat Yard in the Bahamas at 4 a.m. the following day.

Upon reaching the boat yard, the husband informed someone about the incident. That person then contacted the police.

Now, a determined search unfolds. Abaco Island police, the Royal Bahamas Defense Force, and Hope Town Fire and Rescue are working together to find the missing woman.

The Bahamas Is Under a Travel Advisory

The U.S. State Department has issued a Level 2 travel advisory for the Bahamas. Officials are telling American travelers to exercise "increased caution" while in the area. There are concerns about crime, boating, beach safety, and weapons.

One warning stated, "Boating is not well-regulated. Injuries and deaths have occurred."

Those with any knowledge of what happened to the woman are encouraged to speak with authorities.
