The unbeaten Connecticut Huskies faced the South Carolina Gamecocks in the NCAA Tournament Final Four, with a spot in the championship game on the line.

South Carolina came out on top with a 62-48 victory in a physical and tightly contested matchup.

College Basketball Clash Erupts Between Geno Auriemma and Dawn Staley

As the final moments ticked away and the result became clear, UConn head coach Geno Auriemma made his way down the sideline.

What is usually a routine postgame handshake quickly turned into something far more tense.

Auriemma approached South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley and exchanged heated words. This prompted an immediate response.

The situation escalated before assistant coaches stepped in to separate the two.

When the buzzer sounded, Auriemma headed straight to the tunnel. He did not take part in the traditional handshake line, although players from both teams did.

"I will beat Geno's ass," Staley could be heard saying as the game hit boiling point.

"Nah, not really," Auriemma said postgame on if the two have a relationship. "We don't have a lot in common."

Fallout Goes Viral as Rivalry Takes Center Stage

Earlier in the game, Auriemma voiced frustration with officiating, claiming Staley "rants and raves" during an in-game interview heading into the fourth quarter.

UConn finished the game with 17 fouls compared to South Carolina's eight, a disparity that appeared to fuel his frustration.

The confrontation quickly gained traction online, with clips of the exchange circulating widely. A SportsCenter post on X drew over 4.1 million views, as fans weighed in on the heated moment.

Ironically, footage also emerged showing Auriemma and Staley sharing a calm handshake before tip-off, highlighting the sharp contrast in emotions by the end of the game.

The two coaches share history, with Staley having served as an assistant under Auriemma for Team USA at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Auriemma has previously praised Staley for building South Carolina into a powerhouse program.

The Gamecocks now move on to their fourth NCAA championship game in the last five seasons, having also reached six consecutive Final Fours.

They will face UCLA on Sunday as they chase a fourth national title.
