Frontman Kevin Griffin recently took to social media to announce a new initiative. He encouraged fans to "write" a song alongside him or bassist Tom Drummond.
There's a bizarre twist, however. Fans won't be physically collaborating with Griffin or Drummond. Instead, they'll be working through artificial intelligence.
Rock Band AI Contest Invites Fans to Create Next Single
Griffin revealed that the band has partnered with Soundbreak AI to launch the contest.
"I'm excited to announce something that's never been done before," he said.
Fans are invited to use the platform to generate a song, selecting either Griffin or Drummond's AI counterpart to collaborate with during the process.
On May 15, Griffin and Drummond will choose a winner during a livestream. The selected track will then be recorded and released as Better Than Ezra's next single.
Soundbreak AI describes itself as "the world's first fully licensed AI music platform where you can write songs with the official AI versions of your favorite artists and songwriters."
The company also states that the platform is built with artists rather than on them.
The Band's History and Legacy Continues Into the AI Era
The platform features "AI-powered versions of real artists". It is described as being "officially licensed, approved, and supported by the musicians themselves."
Better Than Ezra formed in 1988, with Griffin and Drummond joined by lead guitarist Joel Rundell and drummer Cary Bonnecaze.
Rundell died by suicide in 1990, while Bonnecaze left the band in 1996.
James Arthur Payne Jr. has served as the band's guitarist since 1996, with Michael Jerome joining as drummer in 2009, completing the current lineup.
Based in New Orleans, Louisiana, the band is signed to Round Hill Music and has released nine studio albums to date.
Their debut album Surprise arrived in 1990, while their most recent project, Super Magick, dropped in 2024.
Better Than Ezra are best known for their 1995 hit "Good," which reached number one on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart and helped define their success during the decade.
