This Department Store Is Updating Its Dress Code Policy

Sales at Target have slowed down.

A report by The Minnesota Star Tribune says sales at the department store have dropped by 2.5%. Profits have also fallen by more than 5%.

To address declining sales, Target is launching an image refresh with a standardized dress code for employees. Though this doesn't directly affect customers, they are certainly sharing their opinions.

What Is the New Dress Code at Target?

Part of the image refresh includes a new floor plan in stores. Another change customers will notice is in how employees are dressed.

Walk into any Target, and you'll see cashiers and other workers dressed in jeans or khakis and a red shirt, typically with a large logo.

According to the updated dress code, employees must wear a sleeved red shirt, either solid or patterned, with minimal non-Target logos. A company-provided red vest may also be worn as an option.

Large graphics or writing are not permitted on shirts. While small logos of other brands are acceptable, maroon and burgundy shirts are no longer allowed under the new dress code.

For pants, the new dress code specifies employees must wear only blue denim or khaki pants, shorts, or skirts. Other colors are not permitted. Employees will receive a complimentary red shirt and a half-off coupon for denim.

"Target is focused on getting back to growth, with clear strategic priorities that include elevating the guest experience," a Target spokesperson said in a statement. "As part of that focus, we're continuing to create a more consistent, recognizable in-store experience that delights our guests and helps them easily connect with our team."

Customers Had a Lot to Say About These Changes

Unlike dress code changes at certain restaurants, none of these changes affects customers. But head over to the Target subreddit, and you'll find users have a lot to say about the new dress code.

"Doing everything except actually fixing the numerous problems Target has," wrote one user.

Another declared, "I am team black pants. Target isn't struggling because of the color of TM's pants. Khaki pants won't increase visibility when payroll doesn't allow for adequate staffing."

Someone else said, "Also hard agree on the corporate blindness to the real issues. Give us more hours and equipment that actually works, and I don't mean more AI baloney. It's not hard!!"
