Thomas Rhett Reveals That “Living a Double Life” Almost Blew up His Marriage

Thomas Rhett has explained the reason why his marriage almost imploded, and how his faithfulness to the Lord patched things up.

We all know that marriages can sometimes get a little rocky. And that's no exception for people in the public light. It might even be worse for them—the stress of it all can make things very stressful for both parties.

And, as reported by Taste of Country, Rhett has opened up about it. He revealed the details of his "double life" on Sadie Robertson Huff's WHOA That's Good Podcast.

He reflected on the pressures of success and how it almost ruined his marriage with Lauren Atkins. "I look through my life and I think about all the things that have kind of twisted me or made me like, not the best person to be around. And it has always been either around affirmation or lack of affirmation."

Thomas Rhett explained that as he rose in the ranks to become the country star he's known as today, the affirmation got to his head a little bit. "I look back at our life during that time, and I don't think I stewarded it very well... to be honest with you," he explained.

He went on to explain the internal conflict he had. He said he was "living a double life" and was being pulled in different directions.

Thomas Rhett Explained His Sense of Faith Waivered a Little Over Time

Thomas Rhett said that while he publicly saved face, externally showing his faith, it was a different story on the inside. "Internally, I was dying. I just liked what was happening so much that I think so much of me was being sucked into the world."

He further explained that he took it upon himself to be the sole source of his wife's happiness. But he's reflected on that and now views it as a misstep. "If I look at myself as the pure sole source of her happiness, I'm going to always let her down."

The source of his reflection? He and his wife leaned more into their faith. He says that it saved their marriage. "Joy comes from the Lord. If you can't learn that, then you're always going to be searching for something that makes you happy."

Luckily for the both of them (and us country fans too!), they've worked things out. They're in the process of happily raising five kids together.
