Former ‘Home Improvement’ Star Given 19-Month Jail Sentence

Zachery Ty Bryan, a former star of the sitcom 'Home Improvement,' has been sentenced to 19 months in jail. It's the latest setback for Bryan.

Zachery Ty Bryan played Brad in the 1990s sitcom Home Improvement. He is now sentenced to 19 months in jail because of a probation violation, per KEZI News in Oregon. The cute tyke from the show that starred Tim Allen has had multiple brushes with the law over the years. However, at 44, Bryan is evidently in hot water yet again.

Per TMZ, this latest troubling situation resulted from an earlier one. Bryan was arrested in November 2025. At that time, police said that they were answering a reckless endangerment call. They discovered Bryan with Johnnie Faye Cartwright, his fiancée, and their three kids. Bryan was not allowed to be in touch with her because of a prior domestic violence conviction.

Bryan's Attorney Was Angry

According to KEZI News, "Bryan appeared virtually from California, where he is currently serving a 16-month sentence for a DUII conviction." Zachery Ty Bryan's attorney, John Kolego, is pointedly harsh with his opinion as to how the case was handled. Therefore, he is saying that incarcerating Bryan was not the answer.

Per TMZ, he said, "The sentence was excessive. It was ridiculous. Zachary has experienced a lot of trauma. He has an alcohol problem. Putting him in jail or prison is not going to help the situation. Poor use of resources. I'm very disappointed in the judge. Zachary attended the hearing remotely. He apologized to the court, he said he wants to be the best father he can be, acknowledged he needs help with his alcohol problem and the judge slapped him with this sentence."

Bryan is facing DUII charges in Oklahoma, per KEZI. In fact, he will be extradited there when he is out of jail in California.

Accounts differ as to the number of Bryan's arrests. Actually, according to KEZI, he has reportedly been arrested five times in three states to date. Per People as of November of last year, Bryan was "arrested six times in five years."

Therefore, it's sadly clear that Zachery Ty Bryan has had problems that don't seem to be abating.

Tim Allen Mused Somberly About How Bryan Has Changed

In a 2023 article in The Hollywood Reporter, Bryan's former TV dad, Tim Allen, talked about him. Allen tried to sort out the puzzling mosaic of Bryan's life. While Allen made a sincere effort, it was ultimately futile. He simply said, "Zach is a great kid who has grown into a complex man. All you can do is step aside and let somebody go through their process. At a certain point, he deviated from the guy I know to somebody who is reacting to situations that I had nothing to do with and can't control. [Nevertheless] I don't know what happens when people get corrupted. You just don't know."
