Some couples get married at baseball games or rock concerts. Since the arena is where Metallica makes its living, it probably wasn't the ideal location for its frontman, James Hetfield, to pop the question. So he did it where very few people have done it: underwater.

The band shared the news of Hetfield's engagement on Instagram yesterday, March 15. Thankfully, when breaking the news, Metallica chose not to reference their song "Trapped Under Ice" from the album Ride the Lightning.

In the photo capturing the moment, 62-year-old Hetfield and his partner, Adriana Gillett, are shown in the water wearing scuba gear. The singer holds a piece of paper with the words, "Adriana Gillett will you marry me?"
She is holding a ring box and giving a thumbs-up, meaning that Hetfield got the answer he was hoping for.
The caption Metallica wrote for the photo reads, "She said yes!"
Gillett shared the news on her own social media account. In addition to the photo shared by the band, she also included a picture of a whale shark. Her caption included some more details about how Hetfield popped the question.
"The BEST birthday trip surprise," she wrote. "Swimming with whale sharks on Friday the 13th with the most unique, special, and romantic proposal a Pisces could ever imagine. In a sea full of fish, we caught each other. Thank you God for putting us together."
Fans Were Excited About the News
Lee Jeffries, who has photographed Metallica over the years, commented on Gillett's post, adding that the engagement was "amazing news."
"I've witnessed the beautiful connection you share, and it's something truly real... built on depth, understanding, and the experiences of lives already richly lived," he wrote. "Perhaps even shaped by the chapters that came before, which make what you share now feel all the more meaningful. The way you connect with each other is genuinely special."
Other fans added their own takes, using puns such as "Bride the lightening" and "For whom the wedding bells toll."
It's proving to be a great year for Metallica. The heavy metal legends will also be performing at Sphere in Las Vegas this October.
