"As with all deaths in custody, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will investigate," a spokesperson told the BBC.
Alford was only two months into his eight and a half year sentence. The disgraced actor had been found guilty of sexually assaulting the two teenagers, who were 15 and 14.
"A jury was told the star bought a bottle of vodka for the two teenage girls which they drank at a friend's house in Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire, in April 2022," the BBC reported. "He was found guilty on four counts of sexual activity with the younger girl, and of sexual assault and assault by penetration on the older teenager."
Alford was jailed on Jan. 14. However, this wasn't his first time behind bars. The former Grange Hill star also served nine months in prison back in 1995. He was convicted of "supplying cocaine and cannabis to an undercover News of the World journalist in 1997," per the BBC.
During Alford's trial last year, the jury heard that he was well aware of the ages of the two girls, and proceeded to exploit them anyway.
John Alford Had 22 Acting Credits to His Name
Before his arrest, Alford was a popular figure on British television, having accumulated 22 acting credits throughout his career. Those roles were split between television and movies.
Alford's first role came in 1982, when he appeared in three episodes of Not The Nine O'Clock News in 1982. The following year, he played the role of Master Gunner's Boy in the play The First Part Of King Henry VI.
However, Alford got his big break as part of the smash hit drama Grange Hill. He appeared in 113 episodes between 1985 and 1990. Many of those cast members went on to play larger roles in English television or headed over to the United States.
Alford was back on English television between 1993 and 1998, playing Billy in London's Burning. His last role came in 2017, ironically playing a prison guard on The Hatton Garden Job.
