Sarah Michelle Gellar confirmed that Hulu has pulled the plug on Buffy The Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale after a disappointing pilot episode.

"So I am really sad to have to share this, but I wanted you all to hear it from me," Sarah said in a video posted to Instagram. "Unfortunately, Hulu has decided not to move forward with Buffy New Sunnydale."

Sarah then continued by thanking critically acclaimed director Chloe Zhao for her work and efforts in bringing back the cult classic TV show.

"I want to thank Chloe Zhao because I never thought I would find myself back in Buffy's stylish yet affordable boots. And thanks to Chloe, I was reminded how much I love her and how much she means not only to me, but to all of you, and this doesn't change any of that. I promise: If the apocalypse actually comes, it can still beep me."

Buffy The Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale was originally picked up by Hulu in 2025. However, the pilot, which reportedly wrapped up filming months ago, did little to move the executive. As such, there's no guarantee the pilot ever makes it to air, and with no series to follow, there would be little point.

Ryan Kiera Armstrong Had Been Cast as the New Buffy

The news of Buffy The Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale being cancelled will certainly come as a blow to 16-year-old Ryan Kiera Armstrong. She had been cast to be the new Buffy in the show and would have had the chance to work alongside Sarah Michelle Gellar, who knows all about being a young female lead.

Sarah had previously gushed about Ryan's potential in the role.

"From the moment I saw Ryan's audition, I knew there was only one girl that I wanted by my side," Gellar said. "To have that kind of emotional intelligence and talent at such a young age is truly a gift. The bonus is that her smile lights up even the darkest room."

Fortunately for Buffy fans, Hulu isn't the only streaming giant out there. So, maybe another network picks up the show and allows filming to move forward. For now, though, the show is dead in the water, just like Buffy was after she fought the master at the end of season 1.
