All Charges Dropped After Prank Led to Death of Georgia High School Teacher

The family of the victim supported the charges being dropped, describing the situation as a tragic accident.

When we first reported on the misguided prank that led to the death of a Georgia high school teacher, all five accomplices were facing criminal trespass charges. And the main suspect, who tragically ran the teacher over, Jayden Ryan Wallace, was facing first-degree vehicular homicide charges.

But now, as reported by ABC News, all of these charges have now been dropped. The Hall County Magistrate Court said that a judge has approved the dismissal of all of the cases related to the incident.

Jason Hughes, a high school teacher at North Hall High School, died after things went wrong. After a prank involving rolling toilet paper on the teacher's trees was found out on March 6, the five students attempted to flee. But, in the process, Hughes tripped and fell in the roadway, and Wallace ran him over. Despite attempting to render medical aid, Hughes tragically later died in the hospital.

The attorney of the Wallace family, Graham McKinnon, released a statement. "Jayden Wallace and his family first want to thank Laura Hughes for her remarkable compassion and spirit of forgiveness in the face of the tremendous loss of her husband, Jason Hughes," he said.

"District Attorney Lee Darragh was able to act swiftly because the facts and circumstances are not in dispute," McKinnon said. "Jayden never saw Mr. Hughes, and Jayden's vehicle had only traveled a few feet when the accident occurred."

The Student Has Expressed His Grief Over the Death of the High School Teacher

Continuing the statement, McKinnon expressed Wallace's grief over the situation, stressing that it was an accident. "In the end, there was no crime - only an extremely sad and devastating accident. Jayden is still grieving deeply... [He] is determined to move forward eventually to live a life that would make Jason Hughes proud," McKinnon finished.

The Hughes family also told the outlet that Hughes was aware of the prank and that he was "excited" to catch the students in the act. They fully supported the dropping of the charges against the students.

This was a tragic accident. May Jason Hughes rest in peace.
