She allegedly tried to fatally poison her spouse on multiple separate occasions. A grand jury indicted 75-year-old Alabama lawyer Sarah Baker on 11 charges. These included conspiracy to commit murder; three counts of attempted murder; domestic violence; elder abuse; unlawful distribution of an unlawful substance; and four counts of solicitation to commit a controlled substance crime.

On three separate occasions, the Alabama lawyer allegedly tried to murder her husband. Authorities claim these attempts happened on Sept. 4, Sept. 12 and Sept. 20 of 2025. They charged her with trying to "intentionally cause the death" of her husband, James Doyle Baker.

She's accused of "putting fentanyl in his food and or drink."

According to the DEA, "Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid typically used to treat patients with chronic severe pain or severe pain following surgery.  Fentanyl is a Schedule II controlled substance that is similar to morphine but about 100 times more potent.  Under the supervision of a licensed medical professional, fentanyl has a legitimate medical use.  Patients prescribed fentanyl should be monitored for potential misuse or abuse."

The organization also writes, "It is possible for someone to take a pill without knowing it contains fentanyl. It is also possible to take a pill knowing it contains fentanyl, but with no way of knowing if it contains a lethal dose."

However, these alleged attempts failed. James did not die after ingesting these meals. Instead, he apparently became physically impaired. Additionally, authorities have charged the Alabama lawyer with both domestic and elder abuse as a result.

They also accused her of supplying or furnishing fentanyl on the three dates as well. Authorities first charged the Alabama lawyer with the 11 counts back in November 2025. She posted a $400,000 bail and is currently out of jail while waiting for trial.

Baker previously worked with the Alabama District Attorney's office and as the county attorney. The Alabama State Bar has announced Baker has been "interimly suspended from the practice of law."
