The incident occurred before the dancer was scheduled to take the stage at Peoria Civic Center in Peoria, Illinois, on Sunday, March 1, for Dancing With the Stars Live! But his absence wasn't due to a broken bone. We have the details below.
The "Dancing With the Stars" Cast Member Tried To Work Through It
In a video posted on Instagram over the weekend, Chmerkoskiy shared with his followers that it felt like he had been "spinning everywhere," but it had nothing to do with any fancy dance moves.
"I've just been having vertigo for the last couple of days," he said. "I had it yesterday and was able to get through the show, and then we ran some tests."
According to Cleveland Clinic, vertigo occurs when small calcium carbonate crystals move from the utricle in your inner ear into your semicircular canals. This can cause dizziness, even if you are not spinning, and nausea.
"That little crystal in your equilibrium — again, I'm learning a lot — once it goes out, it's really hard to get it back in," the 39-year-old added. "So ... on the bus when it's moving, I woke up, and I couldn't get myself together."
When Is Val Chmerkoskiy Expected To Return?
Chmerkoskiy also posted an apology to his fans in Peoria, Illinois, on Instagram Stories for being unable to perform.
"Thank you to my fellow castmates for rallying," the star shared. "Little bump in the road. I'll be good to go asap. It takes quite literally me not being able to stand on my feet to keep me off that stage. Unfortunately, I just couldn't make it tonight."
The cast of the Dancing With the Stars Live! tour has the day off today. Chmerkoskiy said he hopes to be back on stage tomorrow (Tuesday). The tour runs through March 13.
Chmerkoskiy has been with the reality competition show since its second season in 2006. He has received the mirrorball trophy three times. His partners were Rumer Willis, Laurie Hernandez, and Xochitl Gomez. He and Alix Earle were runners-up last season.
