American Flag From Abraham Lincoln's Funeral Finds Very Unexpected Home

Pieces of Americana, especially if they are connected with U.S. presidents, are truly priceless parts of our shared history. They need to be safeguarded carefully and passed down to future generations. So the news that an American flag that was used to cover Abraham Lincoln's casket way back in 1865 ended up on display in a steakhouse in the city that never sleeps, it came as a huge surprise.

You would assume that a historic flag like that would be stored away in the National Archives, for example. But it is actually on the wall for all to see and admire at the legendary Keens Steakhouse located in New York City. So while you are munching on your juicy ribeye, you can also revel in your proximity to an echo from the past.

The Eatery Has a Sizable Collection of Fascinating Items

Established well over one hundred years ago, the charmingly elegant restaurant already boasts a wonderful trove of Americana. So the Lincoln flag fits right in very nicely. Per the New York Post, it was proudly unveiled there on Thursday, February 12.

The flag took its rightful place at Keens with many notable objects from yesteryear. Several are part of Lincoln lore. They include a theater program that Lincoln was supposedly holding when he was assassinated in 1865. You can also find an array of political cartoons. There is a renowned letter that the president wrote to a grieving mother. She tragically lost five sons in the Civil War.

Keenes Takes Great Pride in Having the "Extraordinary" Flag

Julia Lisowski, Keens general manager, discussed the flag with the Post, saying, "It's truly a treasure. It's a really special and amazing piece of history that we are so honored to have here." She added, "Guests come to Keens not only for a meal, but for a sense of history, and The Abraham Lincoln Casket Flag 1865 is one of the most meaningful artifacts we have ever had the privilege to display."

Lisowski continued, "Keens has always been a steward of American history, and welcoming this extraordinary piece into our Lincoln Room allows us to honor President Lincoln's legacy in a way that feels both intimate and profound."

The flag was purchased at auction in 2024 by the owner of Keens, Tilman Fertitta. A billionaire, he reportedly shelled out $525,000 for the remarkable item. It underwent some meticulous professional restoration before being put on display for public viewing at Keens.
